Last week was a big week for the wedding industry, some described it as the Superbowl, World Series, and Stanley Cup all rolled into one for those that live and breath weddings. Millions tuned in live as Prince William married Kate Middleton in what will be remembered as the wedding of the century. Naturally I was one of those millions (although I did not wake up at 3 AM like some diehards). I recorded it and watched once in the morning by myself and again at a viewing party with some wedding industry girlfriends). And here are my random thoughts in no particular order:
The Dress
There was so much anticipation regarding what Ms. Middleton was going to wear and my first thought upon seeing her dress & veil was that she looked STUNNING! My next thought was I can’t wait to lose about 40 pounds once this baby comes because she sure is tiny. Two images immediate popped into mind upon seeing the loveliness, Grace Kelly and Maria from the Sound of Music (especially when surrounded by her MOH Pippa and flower-girls). It was very modest but still had some sexy hints to it with the form fitting shape and plunging neckline. I honestly loved it.
Side note: The Sound of Music is one of my all time favorite movies and as a child I always pictured my wedding looking like Maria’s complete with the huge church, long aisle, and long-sleeved form fitting dress. Obviously I ended up having none of those things at my own wedding (tiny church, super short aisle, and strap-less dress) but I still love that scene from the movie.
Flowers & Decor
I had a feeling that the couple would choose a more natural look with the flowers and overall aesthetic of the wedding and they surely did. Kate’s (oh excuse me, Catherine the Dutchess of Cambridge’s) bouquet was small, light, and airy, and comprised of lily of the valley, hyacinth, sweet William, and myrtle. And inside Westminster Abbey, 20 ft. tall trees were brought in to line the aisle and bring a bit of the “English country” to the church. I seriously love trees as wedding decor, and I have always wanted to bring them into a church. I compromised for my own wedding and had trees as centerpieces instead. Now let’s see how many future brides start requesting trees inside ceremony venues, I can definitely see a trend developing there.
Overall
While watching the broadcast, I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by the elegance and reverence of it all. It was so traditional, so formal, and so lovely. Everyone walked tall, moved slowly and gracefully, and the every movement was timed to perfection. It was truly regal and I hope that future brides will incorporate more of that regality and grandeur into their own weddings as it really stands out.
